The Good Old Days

By Nikolaj Leszczynski,
Mass Hort Groundskeeper

Time really flies as you get older. I know I’m only 22 and saying that makes me sound a bit older, but it’s a statement of fact. I am reminded of a quote that appeared during the season finale of “The Office” back in 2013. Andy Bernard, Ed Helms’ character, was talking to the camera about his life after leaving Dunder Mifflin. His quote:

“The weird thing is now I’m exactly where I want to be. I’ve got my dream job at Cornell, and I’m still just thinking about my old pals. Only now they’re the ones I made here. I wish there was a way to know you’re in “the good old days“, before you’ve actually left them.”

Some day in the future I will look back on my summer at Mass Hort as part of “the good old days.” No doubt I’ll reflect on the times I got to mulch in the scorching hot sun, the rocks hitting my face from weed-whacking, and the never ending struggle of having to weed the same area three times over in a single week. But I will also remember the friendly banter with my boss Dan Brooks, joshing around with Ryan Alger, and learning about horticulture from Hannah Traggis. I cannot thank Mass Hort enough for bringing me on this summer. It’s an experience I’ll never forget. If I do, I’ll have my greased-stained t-shirt and pants to remind me.
