CLASSES:

Class 201* - “The Garden Path”

An Aisle Marker design of fresh plant material . Staged on the back of a white chair, 36” high by 18” wide.
Floral container/hanger provided by the Committee at the Exhibitors’ meeting.

Class 202 - “Light Up the Night”

A design of fresh and/or dried plant material incorporating a lantern, provided by the designer. Designer’s choice of design type.
Staged on a pedestal 36” high x 24” square.
Pedestal color: Benjamin Moore, First Crush.

Class 203* – “Show Off!”

A Garden Party Hat designed with fresh and/or dried plant material. Hat staged on a head form provided at the Exhibitors’ Meeting.
Head form may be painted by exhibitor. Samples of dried plant material must be glued to a 5x8”card and identified.
Staged on a pedestal 36” high x 14” round top.
If mailed to the Entries Chair, must be received by March 8.
If delivered to the show, see Design Rule #5.
Pedestal color: Benjamin Moore, First Crush.
Eligible for the Artisan Award.

Class 204 - “From the Farm Stand”

A Still Life design including a decorative unit of fresh plant material.
Staged on a pedestal 30” high x 30” wide x 22” deep with 40” high panel.
Total height: 70.” Tacks, nails, etc. permitted on rear of back panel only.
Draping over back panel allowed.
Pedestal color: Benjamin Moore, First Crush.

Class 205A and 205B*  (Youth Class) "Spring Surprise"

A gift box decorated with fresh and/or dried plant material.
Classes open to parent/child or grandparent/child or adult/child.
Floral container and decorative box provided at the Exhibitors’ Meeting.
Samples of dried plant material must be glued to a 5” x 8”card and identified.
Staged on 1/4 of a 6’ table, draped in black with white overlay.
205A: Grades 1-5, 205B: Grades 6-12.
All entries on first entry day and remain throughout the week.
If delivered to the show, see Design Rule #5.
Eligible for the Youth Award (2).

Class 206 -“I Do”
Artistic Crafts mail-in class; 8 entries, one entry day 3/17/16

A Wedding Reception Centerpiece design of fresh plant material.
Staged on half of a 6’ farm table. Overall space: 36” wide x 42” deep x 30” high.
Max. space for design:18”x24”
Committee provides accessories: ivory plate and napkin, clear glassware and silver tableware.
Photo of accessories placed on table by Committee will be avail. at Exhibitors’ Meeting.
Underlay permitted.

* Classes 201, 202 and 205A/205B Entrants must attend Exhibitors’ Meeting to receive provided items, or arrange to pick up from the Staging or Show Chairman. Entrants pick up designs on the designated date/ time, or arrange for someone else to do so.

DESIGN DIVISION RULES

1. Entries are open to everyone. Two people may work on an entry together in the Open Classes. The designs must be constructed only by the exhibitor(s) whose name(s) appear on the entry card. Only exhibitors and required committee members will be allowed in the show area while designers are working. Exhibitors must not be on the floor while judging is in progress

2. The Exhibitors’ meeting will be held Saturday, January 27 at 10:30 at Elm Bank, Hunnewell Building, 900 Washington St., Wellesley. (Snow date Monday, January 29.) Complete show, staging information and Committee provided items will be given at this time.

3. ENTRY DATES: Tuesday, March 13 and Friday, March 16, 2018. Exhibitors may enter the building at 6:00 a.m. Exhibits must be ready for judging with all designers off the floor by 8:30 a.m. Awards will be given on each entry day.

4. REMOVAL: Thursday, March 15, at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, March 18, at 6:15 p.m. Exhibitors or a designated person must remove designs at the designated time. Designs not removed will be discarded.

5. Classes may be partially completed at home and finished at the show. Classes 203 and 205 may be delivered Monday, March 12, 2:00 - 5:00 p.m.

6. A preliminary list of plant material (botanical and common names required) must be sent by mail or e-mail to the Classification Chairman before March 7. When the design is completed, the list may be updated and must be passed by the Classification Chairman before the exhibitor may leave the show area.

7. All components must be within the frame of reference. A design may not go outside the total allotted space.

8. Treating fresh plant material and use of artificial plant material are strictly prohibited. Some plant material must be used in every design.
 
9. Plants listed on the Massachusetts Prohibited Plant List are not permitted in
Design Division II. A current list may be found on www.mass.gov/agr.
Menu food and live animals are not allowed.

10. Massachusetts Horticultural Society policy requires that businesses, nonprofit organizations, and commercial products may not be promoted within a design. Catalogs, circulars, logos and business cards may not be displayed. Exhibits are to be non-commercial in character.

11. It is the exhibitors’ responsibility to keep designs in pristine condition throughout the show. A design may be removed at the Committee’s discretion.

12. Massachusetts Horticultural Society will provide the best possible protection to all exhibits. However, they distinctly disclaim all liability for loss or damage to designs and personal property.

13. Exhibitors are asked to remember that this is a flower show and emphasis should be placed on plant material.

14. If an exhibitor is unable to enter a design, it is the exhibitor’s responsibility to provide a replacement and to contact the Entries Chairman with complete information on the replacement.

15. The Awards Ceremony will be held Thursday, April 12, at 7:00 p.m. at Elm Bank, Hunnewell Building, 900 Washington St., Wellesley.
 
Point Scoring: The Standard System of Judging is used; allows for one First (90 points or above), one Second (85 points or above), one Third (80 points or above), and one or more Honorable Mention (75 points or above), in each class.

Classes 201, 202, 203, 204 and 206 are eligible for The John Taylor Arms Award, Garden Club of America Zone I Bowl, GCA Certificate of Excellence in Floral Design, Susan Scheel Thomas Novice Award, Best of Day, National Garden Clubs Design Award, Ruth Wallack Design Award, Mass Horticulture Novice Award and the Mass Horticulture Best Interpretation Award.

Class 203 is eligible for the Artisan Award.

Class 205A and 205B are eligible for the Youth Award (2). Awarded to the best design with a score of 95 points or more.
